Drinks manufacturer recalls water after mould found

Food Standards Scotland (FSS) issued a recall notice for the drinks last week (September 7), following a complaint that they had a strong odour and unpleasant taste.

Macb has withdrawn from sale all flavours of the water in all sizes – 330ml, 500ml and 1.5l – with the best before dates July 2018, August 2018 and September2018.

A statement issued by the company said: "Following a quality issue with our Macb Strawberry & Kiwi still flavoured water ... we have received a small number of complaints on our other still flavours and bottle sizes.​

"Please be assured that whilst the drink may have a strong odour and be unpleasant to taste, this is not a food safety issue."​

The FSS advised consumers who might have bought any flavoured water with the above best before dates to contact Macb directly.

Last week also saw Whitworths and Asda recall food products, because of undeclared allergens and packaging errors.

Posed a health risk​

Whitworths recalled packs of its milk chocolate raisins, because they contained peanuts not mentioned on the label. The product, which was only sold in Poundland stores, posed a health risk for consumers with an allergy to peanuts.

The recall applied to 150g packs of the chocolate raisins with the best before date of July 2018 with the batch code L519517.

A statement from Whitworths said: "As a precautionary measure, the supplier has initiated a product recall on one batch of milk chocolate raisins supplied to Poundland.​

"There is a remote risk that a raw material supply error may lead to a few packs to become contaminated with chocolate coated peanuts. We apologise for any inconvenience and thank you for your cooperation."​

Consumers who had bought the affected product were advised to return it to their nearest store as soon as possible to receive a full refund.

Packaging error​

This month also saw Asda has recall its Classic Fish Pie, after a packaging error meant the packaging actually contained Asda's Pulled Chicken and Bacon Pie.

The Pulled Chicken and Bacon Pie also contained mustard, which was not mentioned on the label, making it a possible health risk for consumers with an allergy to the ingredient.

The recall applied to 800g packs of the product, with the best before date of September 7 2017 and the barcode 505478134646.

Consumers who have bought the product were advised to return it to their nearest store, where they will receive a full refund.

Meanwhile, a further 26 food products have been recalled​ because of the fipronil-contaminated imported egg scandal, according to the Food Standards Agency (FSA), bringing the total number of products withdrawn from sale because of the insecticide to 65.
